My previous website domain name KarensGen.Com lapsed and before I could renew cyber-squatters snatched it up. Their fee to buy it back was very unreasonable so I had to rename my website (the dash is added).

History

In Scotland "House of Edenburgh" records, James Lowe in the parish of Kirriemuir and Easson Will in the parish of Monifieth were married on 05 DEC 1830. Six of 10 children were born before the family traveled to America 14 years later.

On July 24, 1843, the family traveled from Dundee, Scotland on a ship named "Blackness" and the trip to America took 3 weeks. The parents and the 5 children settled near Chicago, Illinois and 4 more children were born. The 1850 Census shows the family of 8 living in South Chicago Township.

James and Easson Low lived the rest of their lives in the Chicago area called Lyonsville. James worked delivering water to Chicago. They are buried at the Lyonsville Congregational Church Cemetery, suburb in Chicago.

It is not known exactly how the "e" was added to the Low name, but it is said that James Low (Jr.) had such a time during Civil War getting the right mail, so he added the e. His brother George followed suit, these being the only sons to add the e.

Pictured is one of two trunks that made their way to America in 1843. One was called the blue trunk and one the red trunk. When the family arrived in America there were men waiting to meet the ship, wanting to buy them. They used the wood to make violin cases. The inscription in this trunk says Scotland 1803 (Home of Miriam McNulty Peterson, Lincoln, NE).

If you have come to my website via Ancestry: Several years ago the genealogy giant Ancestry absorbed the genealogy websites of Rootsweb along with personal databases posted at Rootsweb's WorldConnect Project that included a large database of my own family information. I started using Rootsweb in 2000 and they gave us the capability to add, remove, and update our information at anytime and I used these options frequently to post correct and current data. Presently (2006) I am told by Ancestry that we cannot maintain our own databases, we cannot even remove them. If you find information at Ancestry with my name attached please search my website for current information, the databases posted at Ancestry contain inaccurate information. - Karen Rowe.
